Every good Catholic boy needs to have a cross over his bed…but I could never find the right one….until now!
I don’t have much background about the piece itself…but I am learning a thing or two about “Tramp Art” (http://www.folkartisans.com/sup/tramhist.html)
Oh…and if you are curious about the skull and crossbones at the bottom (I sure was)…I found this explanation on wikipedia:
On some crucifixes a skull and crossbones are shown below the corpus, referring to Golgotha (Calvary), the site at which Jesus was crucified, which the Gospels say means in Hebrew “the place of the skull.”[6] Medieval tradition held that it was the burial-place of Adam and Eve, and that the cross of Christ was raised directly over Adam’s skull, so many crucifixes manufactured in Catholic countries still show the skull and crossbones below the corpus.
I have been searching for the perfect antique Bible for YEARS…and finally grabbed this one from 1870. Check out the description below. I’m telling you…I should be on Storage Wars……..YUUUUUUUP!!!

London: James Virtue, c1870. HUGE FOLIO, thick and heavy gilt and raised leather designed family bible from the Civil War Era, in nice shape. LOADED with full page steel engravings and illustrations, family records pages and more. The interior of this Bible is is super clean, with only some minor browning and the usual foxing/staining as with this era. All pages bound and present, with only light soiling. Pages CLEAN, tight and binding sound. Covers open with little worry. Beautiful gilt blindstamped design to covers bordered in gilt and title. Family records pages are filled in with the Hollenbaugh family of Pennsylvania from 1870s-1900. Also found within is a gilt printed church paper (gorgeous) and a very spooky picture of a mass burial at some point in the easrly 1900s-very reminiscent of Ireland. Catches remain from clasp system, actual clasps are missing. This Bible is a true collectible and amazingly HUGE volume, that sells online at times for over 1500$!! Good luck…own a true relic from our Nation during its darkest times of the Civil War…one can only imagine what the family was doing during these times when this Bible was probably a very active player in their religious lives! The perfect Holiday gift- a Bible to share with generations to come!
